The 2026 Iowa Legislative session continues to wind down.

House Representative for District 23 Ray Sorensen says that one of the bills that the House looked at was House Study Bill 774, which pertains to a water trail sales exemption. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that this would help non-profit led water trail projects stretch funding further.

“If they’re doing the public good, they’re improving recreation and building out regional infrastructure. The idea is to not hit them with sales tax on the front end, and make those projects harder to complete. So the bill itself encourages outdoor recreation and tourism, supports regional infrastructure and river access, and treats certain public purpose nonprofit projects more like other tax exempt public projects.”

Sorensen mentions that he’s generally supportive of efforts like this that remove unnecessary tax costs from worthwhile community infrastructure projects. He adds that this also helps small towns, and regional tourism.
