Another Democratic candidate for Iowa House District 47 nomination made a stop at the Jefferson Rotary Club meeting on Monday.

Chris New was born in Kansas and his family moved to Iowa when he was five years old. He graduated from high school in Sioux City, before earning a bachelor’s degree from Buena Vista University in communications. He now lives in Dallas Center with his wife and two kids and he works as a video producer for Lutheran Church of Hope.

New said he decided to run for public office because as a Democrat, he sees the Trump Administration being anti-democratic, and he wants Iowa to push back on that ideology. He also wants to address key issues facing Iowans at the state legislature that didn’t get covered.

“I was surprised at this last Legislative session that weren’t even taken up, things like water quality, things like school vouchers and the lack of accountability in that area. Things that those 80 percent issues that people agree should be tackled and weren’t tackled or were giving just kind of a passing thought at the end of the session. So, if I can get into the Statehouse, I’d like to tackle those issues for all Iowans.”

New told Rotarians he and his Democratic opponent, Charley Newman, both had the same idea of wanting to be someone who would take the leap to run as a Democrat in a Republican-leaning House District to fight for what Iowans want and need.
