Three people that were allegedly involved in a shooting incident in Sac County last year, including a teen from Jefferson, had their charges dismissed.

According to court documents, District Court Judge Christopher Polking granted Sac County Attorney Ben Smith’s motion to dismiss a Class C Felony for willful injury for 17-year-old Keegan Kennedy of Jefferson on April 30th in Sac County District Court.

Additionally, court documents state that Judge Polking also granted the same requests by Smith to dismiss all charges for 26-year-old Alexis Carothers of a Class B Felony for second degree kidnapping, a Class C Felony for willful injury, two Class D Felonies for going armed with intent and possession of a firearm by a felon, and an aggravated misdemeanor for interference with official -obstruct prosecution, as well as the charges for 18-year-old Carson Edwards for a Class C Felony for willful injury and a Class D Felony for aiding and abetting in the shooting.

Court documents show that the reasons the Sac County Attorney’s Office gave included that they believe it was in the best interest of justice and judicial economy that the case against the accused be dismissed without prejudice. Court documents state that Kennedy also had a previous Class B Felony for attempted murder dismissed as well.

Smith says the reason for the dismissal of charges of all three was because he is hoping to use their testimonies against, what Smith believes, is the main suspect in the shooting, Brandon Holm. The incident occurred on May 4, 2025 when the victim was sitting in the front seat of a vehicle and was shot in the face and survived.

Smith states that an arrest warrant has been issued for Holm, who is currently in federal prison for unrelated charges and is unsure of when Holm will be transported to the Sac County Jail. Smith adds that since the charges against the other three were dismissed without prejudice means that those same charges could be re-filed in the future.
