With the warmer weather and some chances of rainfall this weekend, there might be some opportunities for people to enjoy being on the Raccoon River.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer for Greene County Aron Arthur says the river along Greene County is at a great level for those who want to go floating or kayaking. He advises to make sure that there are lifejackets with you and even though by law, those younger than 13 years old must be wearing a lifejacket, he recommends everyone wearing them.

Arthur talks about another critical thing to keep in mind when planning to be on the river.

“And be aware that it may take you longer to get to your destination than what you think. So, if you plan on going on a float, make sure you give yourself enough time. We run into people that start too late and then they get worried and get lost in the dark because it takes longer to get down there with the water. The water’s at a good level, it’s not real fast and it’s not real slow.”

Arthur adds that anyone who is on the Raccoon River should also be aware of any strainers that contain fallen or broken trees, along with other types of debris that may be in the water and could cause issues.
