Earlier this week, several Greene County High School students gained real world experience in farming.

Agriculture Teacher Steve Kehoe says all of the agriculture classes were involved with planting corn on the test plot that is located near the high school. He states that the students planted two varieties of corn that came from Cody Renwanz and Greene County Ag, and the planter that was used was purchased from Rueter’s Red Power, who assisted the students removing and installing the new Precision technology.

Kehoe notes that Connor Sackett and Blake Renwanz from Rueter’s reviewed the data that can be collected from the Precision Planter that will be used for educational purposes. He details that they also worked with Greene County Ag for fertilizer, herbicide and seed needs and will be using the Sky Scout program with Landus Cooperative to monitor the fields over the summer break. Kehoe points out that they also plan to work with NEW Cooperative for a fungicide treatment trial program. He says it is the department’s goal to work with several different agriculture-related supply services within the county.

Kehoe adds that with the entire school lab area being 33.5 acres, this upcoming fall, the department and the high school are looking to work with the National Resources Conservation Services program for pollinator butter strips around the two retention ponds and continue to work with agriculture partners in Greene County for more educational opportunities in the future.
