Memorial Day is fast approaching, and many will be celebrating the holiday over the weekend.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Shelby McCreedy says that as with all holidays, individuals need to make sure that they are being safe. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio what drivers should keep an eye out for over the weekend, and on Monday.
“People need to be aware of the fact that there is going to be heavy traffic, which means attention is paramount to staying safe. Put the phone down, obviously stay focused on what you’re doing. But the other thing about Memorial Day is it also begins the 100 Deadly Days of Summer. So people need to be aware of the fact that because of the increased traffic patterns, because younger drivers are out of school, the danger does increase beginning Memorial Day weekend.”
McCreedy mentions that the ISP, along with many other law enforcement agencies across the state, is currently taking part in a Click-it-or-Ticket campaign. She adds that the decision to wear a seatbelt is paramount in the case of a crash, especially with the multitude of studies showing how wearing your seatbelt could save your life in the event of a crash.
