RE taxesHundreds of parcels of land will be included in this year’s Greene County tax sale.

Treasurer Donna Lawson says there are 372 parcels with over $350,000 in delinquent taxes, which is more than she has ever had at the tax sale in her 30 years as treasurer. It is usually around $100,000 in delinquent taxes. A property that is delinquent on their property taxes from either the March or September installment, are available for the tax sale. She points out that those who purchase tax certificates at the tax sale typically don’t want the property.

“They do it as an investment because it is two percent a month is what they receive on their money. You can’t get that any place else right now. That has became quite a deal for investors in the state of Iowa. So they do not want your property. So hopefully they’re hoping that you pick it up and they get their money back.”

Lawson says registered participants are given a number and the tax sale works like a lottery with a computer choosing numbers at random and the potential buyer can either accept or pass on the presented parcel. If no one claims it, then it goes to the county.

Anyone interested in participating in the tax sale must register at the treasurer’s office by Thursday, June 16th. The tax sale will be on June 20th at 9am at the courthouse.

Call the Treasurer’s office for more information or to sign up for the tax sale at 386-5675.
