Greene County RamsThe kindergarten through 12th grade certified enrollment figures are out for Greene County School District.

The district saw a 50 student enrollment decrease for the 2016-17 school year from 1,298 students to 1,248 students. Superintendent Tim Christensen explains how much money the district will lose due to the declining enrollment.

“One student is basically $6,600, so that equates to $330,000 (loss). In Iowa there is what they call 101 percent budget guarantee, so that decline in enrollment actually will affect us in two years. But talked to the (school) board that we need to look at how we’re going to address that issue in terms of bridging that gap with funding being down the following year.”

Last year, the district was up 14 students and took a dip again the 2013-14 school year when the certified enrollment dropped 19 students.

Students that open enrolled out of the district totaled 126, which was the exact same number as last school year. Thirty-four students opened enrolled to Paton-Churdan and last year 29 students open enrolled to P-C. Those students that open enrolled into the Greene County School District this year was 67, which was slightly higher than last year at 64.

Each district is required to submit their certified enrollment figures to the state by October 15th.
