Guthrie-ISU-Ext-Guthrie-County-Fair-1-4-SkyNow that we are in full swing of fall, Guthrie County Extension has some tips of how to build a proper compost pile.

A compost pile usually consists of garden debris, leaves, grass clippings, straw, sawdust, small twigs and branches. You can also use food scraps like apple cores, potato and banana peels, and rinds from melons. Used coffee grounds and eggshells can also be included.

The compost pile should be at least three-foot-by-three-foot and three-foot high. You have to turn it regularly and water it so that it is ready by early next summer. If you wait until early next spring to build a compost pile, it will be ready by late summer.

Compost piles are used to enhance the soil for better garden and plant growth in your yard.
