A scoring drought lasting nearly 10 minutes of playing time was a big story line for the Greene County High School girls’ basketball team on Tuesday night as the Rams lost to PCM in Monroe by a 68-27 final. Coach Dean Lyons’ team made its season debut while PCM improved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference in a game heard on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
The Rams trailed 14-9 after one quarter and 24-18 midway through the second, then did not score again until just over two minutes remained in the third period. During that time, PCM put 17 unanswered points on the board. The Mustangs had scored more in each half than the Rams had for the game.
PCM had a trio of 15 point scorers in Kayla Jennings, Bailey Broderson, and Regan Freland. The Mustangs unofficially made 26 of 63 field goal attempts and 14 of 23 tries from the free throw line, while turning the ball over just eight times.
The Rams were led by junior Laurin Lyons with 11 points, nine of those in the first 12 minutes of the game. Seniors Hannah Promes and Taylor Wessling scored eight and five points, respectively. Greene County unofficially went 11 for 33 from the floor, three for 11 from the foul line, and had 33 turnovers.
