Increasing deer vs. car accidents occur this time of year in Iowa and if you strike a deer, you may be able to take it home with you.
Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says they can issue a Department of Natural Resources deer salvage tag.
“We can issue a salvage tag to someone that has found an injured deer or was actually involved in a car vs deer accident. We can assign that to you and that is sent to the DNR that the deer was taken for salvage.”
However, if someone takes a deer without reporting it to law enforcement of a DNR Enforcement Officer, Haupert notes that the individual can be fined several hundreds of dollars and issued a citation for transporting.
Haupert recommends contacting either your local law enforcement agency or your DNR Enforcement Officer for your county about obtaining deer salvage tags.
