Greene County’s high school basketball teams play on the road for the final time in 2016 when they head east to Nevada. The Rams and Cubs are scheduled for a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girl/boy doubleheader.
Nevada is 5-1 on the girls’ side with a 5-0 HOIAC record and a five game winning streak. All their wins have been by double digits and their conference defensive average is a mere 22 points per game. Junior Lexy Koudelka leads the offense for the Cubs at nearly 21 points per game, and she hauls down 12.6 rebounds per contest.
The Rams have won three girls’ games in a row and are 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Senior Kenna Marquardt and junior Laurin Lyons are the two leading scorers and rebounders. Combined, they average 16.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
The Nevada boys are 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the HOIAC. Consistency has been an issue as the Cubs have scored as many as 71 points in a game and as few as 28. The same holds true on defense as they given up as little as 36 points, but allowed more than 70 points on two occasions.
The Rams are scoring 70 per game and giving up 55. Senior Trey Tucker leads the team in scoring at 22.4 points per game. Tucker is coming off a 27 point, seven assist, four rebound night in Tuesday’s 67-63 loss at home to undefeated South Hamilton (Jewell). He made 10 of 15 shots from the floor including four of six from three-point range, and played 31 of the 32 minutes while being called for just one foul.
Coverage on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com begins at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow.
