A Jefferson man faces felony charges following a domestic dispute Saturday, December 10th.
Police Chief Mark Clouse says they received a call of a situation at a rental property in the 300 block of South Pinet Street at 3:54am.
During the investigation, the female victim claimed her estranged husband entered her residence, using a family member’s key, and held her against her will for about one and a half hours. During the incident, the victim presented a handgun that she had at her residence with a concealed to carry permit. A struggle ensued and the accused ended up with the handgun and fired one round into the ceiling of the bedroom. He also allegedly tried to have sex with her against her will, made repeated threats against her and also to hurt himself. The suspect then left the residence just before 4am.
Officers went to the suspect’s house in the 400 block of North Maple Street to remove the couple’s two teenage children. The suspect then returned home around 7:30am with the handgun. A perimeter was set up by officers, the Greene County Sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol and they were able to get the suspect out of his home without incident.
Clouse says he determined the suspect needed medical evaluation, so they took him to Greene County Medical Center. Following the evaluation hearing in court on Wednesday, the suspect was placed under arrest. Fifty year-old James Alan Watters was charged with a Class B Felony for burglary, a Class C Felony for intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a Class D Felony for assault with intent to commit sexual abuse and an aggravated misdemeanor for domestic abuse assault or use of weapon.
He was booked and released from the Greene County jail.
