Gilbert defeated Greene County in a girl/boy basketball doubleheader Friday night in Jefferson. The girls’ final was 62-42, while Gilbert won 68-62 in overtime in the boys’ contest. Gilbert improved to 4-7 overall and 3-5 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girls’ play and 6-2 overall on the boys’ side with a 5-2 conference record. The Greene County girls fell to 3-9 and 2-6, while the boys are now 6-4 and 5-2. Aside from the Tigers getting two road wins, the big story was all the fouls called, and free throw shots attempts.
The girls’ game was only a prelude to what was to unfold from the charity stripe. The Rams were a modest six of 13 shooting free throws while the Tigers went 21 of 32 from the line including 13 of 20 in the fourth quarter. Junior Sarah Hinners led Gilbert with 23 points and she was 11 of 14 from the line. Hinners entered the game at less than nine points per contest. The Rams were led by senior Kenna Marquardt with 15 points and she was four of five from the foul line.
The boys’ game is where the big free throw and foul numbers happened. There were 60 fouls called with 33 whistled on the Rams and 27 on the Tigers. Gilbert was called for 17 first half fouls to 11 for the Rams, but the tide turned after intermission when the Rams were called for 22 fouls and the Tigers were whistled for 10. Gilbert had a big advantage at the charity stripe where they were 34 of 49. Greene County went 17 of 30 shooting free throws.
The Tigers were had four players with 12, 13, or 14 points. led by senior Steven Lawrence and sophomore Will Turner with 14 each. The visiting team went 12 of 16 from the foul line in OT while the Rams were four of six in the extra four minutes.
Four Greene County boys fouled out and two others finished with four fouls. Senior Trey Tucker had 33 points, 53.2% of the team total. Junior Wade Adcock scored 16 with 10 from sophomore Trey Hinote and three by senior Thomas Jacobsen. No one else scored for the Rams.
The doubleheader took three hours, 20 minutes to play, with the boys’ game taking 1 hour, 45 minutes. Both games were broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
Next up for the Greene County teams is a conference twin bill on Tuesday, Jan. 10 in the middle school gym in Jefferson vs. PCM (Monroe).
