It’s round number two this week for the ACGC Charger track and field teams today as both will take to the road and converge on the Perry High School Coed Davis Relays.
After a solid performance in each of their respective first meets, both will tackle another challenging early meet in Perry. Both look to improve upon what last year’s Guthrie County counterparts accomplished which for the girls was a solid 4th place finish while the Charger boys aim to reach higher than their 6th place performance last year.
While the few two meets on paper may not look like they have any significant impact on the end of the season, on the contrary, the do have a significant role to play. ACGC head boys track coach Tyler Mosbach mentioned to Raccoon Valley Radio how he uses the first few meets as gauging tools and to start the process to see what combinations work best at the end of the season.
“I think it’s an opportunity to get out feet wet, see what we’re capable of, see some different things in different events, and just to be able to plug and play some guys into different things. Throughout the season we’re going to be putting guys in different events and maybe events that they don’t see themselves running. As long as we can see what some of the kids are capable of and get a better idea for where we want them later on in the season,” explained coach Mosbach.
ACGC head girls track coach Dave Spratte shared those thoughts adding that finding the right combinations now makes things easier in the long run.
“I think it’s important to move the pieces around because then it helps you answer a lot of questions as a coach so you really know when you get down to the end of the season what the girls can do and it helps make the decisions for the state qualifying meet and conference a lot easier,” explained coach Spratte.
Both teams will kick off their portion of the Davis Relays in Perry this afternoon beginning at 4:45 pm.
