Perry and Greene County will both be represented with automatic qualifiers at next week’s boys’ Class 3A State track & field meet. The Blue Jays and Rams were in Denison on Thursday at a State Qualifying Meet. The first and second place finishers in each event are automatic qualifiers.

The Rams have one automatic State qualifier in freshman Carter Morton, who won the high jump with a career best height of 6′ 2″. Prior to Thursday the ninth grader had never jumped higher than 5′ 10″.

Perry has automatic qualifiers in junior Reece Dunlap, the winner of the 200 meter dash in 22:56 seconds and junior Brandon Kenyon, the second place finisher in the 800 meters in 2:03.08.

Both the Rams and Blue Jays have other events that performed well, but were not first or second. Some of Perry’s best chances to qualify on an at-large basis are the fourth place 4 x 400 meter relay of Dunlap, Kenyon, Rashon Ivory, and Adan Medina in 3:24.93; the third place 4 x 800 meter relay in 8:24.87 with Kenyon, Ivory, Zachary Thompson, and Kaleb Olejniczak; the third place distance medley relay in 3:50.85 with Martinez Manassess, Nic Fellom, Alexis Garrido, and Thompson; the third place sprint medley relay in 1:37.28 consisting of Martinez, Kenyon, Dunlap, and Medina.

Greene County’s 4 x 100 meter relay was third in 44.50 seconds with Logan Lansman, Chase Stoline, Colby Kafer, and Nick Schroeder.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton won the team title with 178 points. Glenwood was second at 145, followed by Atlantic 110, Harlan 80, Denison-Schleswig 75, Carroll 58, Perry 55, and 38 for Greene County.

The State Coed Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines is May 18-19-20. The Iowa High School Athletic Association is expected to announce the at-large qualifiers in each event this afternoon.
