North Polk sophomore Coelton Parkins tossed a 2 hit shutout Tuesday night as the visiting Comets defeated Perry 1-0 in high school baseball. Parkins dominated from the start facing just one batter above the minimum. The loss overshadowed a strong pitching performance from Perry senior Janier Puente. The hard throwing right hander went 6 solid innings surrendering just 2 hits and 3 walks and 1 earned run while striking out 8.
North Polk pushed the game’s only run across in the top of the 5th inning. Following back to back walks to start the inning, Adam Moxley delivered a sacrifice bunt to advance runners to second and third. Colby Cupp then delivered a ground ball to a drawn in infield but the ball was bobbled for a split second forcing Perry to get the out at first and not go home with the throw. Payton Johnson scored the game’s only run.
Parkins was perfect for the first 4 innings. Adan Medina broke up the perfect game in the 5th inning with a lead off double. However, Brandon Kenyon popped up a bunt on a sacrifice attempt which resulted in a double play. Kyle Nevitt added a 7th inning single but Parkins shut the door again striking out both Janier Puente and Adan Medina to end the game. Parkins finished with 10 strikeouts and no walks.
North Polk improves to 2-0 while Perry falls to 0-2. The Bluejays will try to discover their offense tonight when they host Norwalk in a 7:15 game at Progressive Field. Shawn Kenney will have play by play on KDLS
