jefferson welcomeThe City of Jefferson crews have been doing their part to help control the mosquito population this summer.

Public Works Director Dave Morlan says they send out their sprayer truck every Tuesday and Thursday between 8:30 and 11pm spraying the town for mosquitos. He says they split up the town so that every street is covered during the two days of spraying. A machine sprays a mist-like fog that spreads throughout the town. Morlan says it isn’t harmful to humans and that when they spray, people can shut their windows, but otherwise it can let off a slightly unpleasant smell.

City Administrator Mike Palmer talks about another way that they are helping to prevent mosquitos from showing up this summer.

“In addition to spraying, Public Works has also put out these mosquito briquets in the revines. And that helps a lot to control the mosquitoes in stagnant water. Those mosquitos as we all know when they come out in season, it’s hard and heavy. But I think they’ve got it under control for now.”

The spraying is usually weather dependent and will not happen if it is raining.
