Two people were injured from a two vehicle accident Thursday in Greene County.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams says at 11:18am, the Greene County Sheriff’s office, Greene County Emergency Medical Services and the Jefferson Fire and Police departments responded to the crash at 235th Street near R Avenue.

Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio 55-year-old Rochelle Schaffer of Grand Junction was heading west on 235th Street and tried to pass another vehicle when her 2001 Chevrolet Impala hit an eastbound Greene County Secondary Roads dump truck on the rear driver’s side tire. The driver of the dump truck, 66-year-old Gary Schmidt of Rippey, tried to avoid the collision by driving into the south ditch. After the Impala hit the dump truck, the Impala spun around on the road, while the dump truck went into the north ditch and rolled onto it’s side.

Williams says firefighters took 30 minutes and two sets of Jaws of Life to extricate Schaffer from her vehicle. She was then taken by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Schmidt was taken by private vehicle to Greene County Medical Center also with non-life threatening injuries. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. The Impala was a total loss and the dump truck sustained $14,000 in damages.

Williams adds that there were four firefighters who were treated by EMS personnel for heat exhaustion. Schaffer was cited for unsafe passing and failure to provide current insurance.
