With the recent announcement of a new Apple data center facility in Waukee, the impact on residents of Waukee, Dallas County, and the State of Iowa has come into question.

The $1.3 billion project will be built over the course of the next four years, on land to the west of Waukee not too far from Adel. The economic impact is expected to be felt throughout the County, as it will create 50 jobs at the facility and more than 500 construction jobs over the next two decades. However, Iowa Economic Development Authority offered $19.65 million in investment tax credits to further entice Apple to come to Iowa. Additionally, the Waukee City Council approved a 20-year tax abatement, estimated to be worth nearly $190 million.

For their part, Apple has promised to contribute $100 million to the City of Waukee and surrounding areas to help build infrastructure and a new sports complex. Apple representatives said they have data centers all across the United States, and this is the first time they’ve contributed this amount of money to a local area.

There is no official timeline yet for the construction of the Waukee Apple facilities, though they’re scheduled to be completed in 2021. Additionally, there is a state-funded plan to develop 2,000 acres in the area between Waukee and Adel over the next 20 years.
