With the 2017-18 school year now underway, there are increased number of kids being picked up and dropped off in the rural parts of Greene County.
Sheriff Jack Williams reminds everyone to use caution when traveling out on the rural roads, especially at intersections where there is tall corn.
“There will be buses back out on the roads where you may have never had traffic and now there will be due to the buses. So just slow down, check the intersections before you go through them. And then also be aware that there may be kids standing out at the end of the driveways waiting for the bus. So just slow down at residences where there might be kids at.”
He points out when it is illegal to pass a school bus on the road.
“Anytime that the red flashers or the stop sign is out, it is illegal to pass the bus. And normally when they turn on their yellows, you’re better off just stopping because it’s shortly after that the reds come on.”
Williams says if someone passes a school bus illegally, they can be fined $700. Bus drivers are also trained to write down the license plate and vehicle description.
