Greene County went 3-2 on Saturday and finished in fourth place at the Ogden Dual Meet Tournament. Coach Mark Sawhill’s team improved to 4-7 on the season after entering the day with a 1-5 dual meet record. The Rams are just one win away from equaling the win total from all of last season, and the winless season of two years ago is a distant memory.
There were 10 teams at the tourney with two round-robin pools of five teams each. The Rams were short four wrestlers Saturday due to injury and illness, but still went 3-1 in their pool. Other teams also had holes in their lineups and forfeits were not uncommon. Greene County began the day with a 42-39 victory over Clarke (Osceola), a team they’ll see at the Winterset Sectional in February. Next up was the host Ogden team and the Rams were 36-33 winners over the Bulldogs. A 39-36 loss to Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) was next, and then came a 42-30 victory over Coon Rapids-Bayard, which put Greene County in second place in their pool. Humboldt placed second in the other pool and the Wildcats were 63-18 winners over the Rams.
Eight of the 10 wrestlers had winning records on Saturday for the Rams. Leading the way was senior Cayden Gerdes, who was 5-0 at 138 lbs. He had four falls and one major decision on the day and improved his season record to 13-3. Sophomore Garrett Tasler at 113 lbs. was 4-1 overall with his only loss taking place when he moved up a weight class to 120 lbs.
