Tomorrow, the Perry Police Department will be hosting their annual “Shop with a Cop” event.
The department selected 21 local children to take part in the program, which will pair them up with local law enforcement for a holiday shopping spree. Each kid will have around $125 to spend at various stores in Perry. They’ll need to buy something for each member of their family, as well as something for themselves. Following the shopping, the participants will have lunch and wrap presents together. The event will start at 8 a.m. tomorrow, with the lunch starting at noon.
The purpose of “Shop with a Cop” is twofold: first, to give families in need a good holiday; and second, to show the kids that officers are normal people, and individuals they can trust. The participating volunteers include officers with the Perry Police Department, members of Dallas County Emergency Medical Services, and Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputies. Around $5,000 was raised for this year’s program, though a portion of those funds will go towards food baskets for families in need.
