Perry senior Zach Thompson has gradually been improving his position at the state wrestling tournament. After 6th place finishes in his freshman and sophomore years, Thompson worked his way up to third last season in the Class 2A podium. This year, Thompson enters the 3A field for the first time with one goal in mind.
“I want to close out my career in the state championship,” stated the quiet leader. “I feel if I put it all together over the next three days that I can get there. I’ve worked so hard for this moment.”
Thompson was able to rally and win a scary district semifinal match this past Saturday at Waukee. Head Coach Mark Weber feels its Thompson’s poise which makes him so special.
“He just doesn’t get rattled. Having been to state four times, he knows what to expect and how to handle the situation. He is such a good preparation guy and has enough offensive weapons to be really dangerous this weekend.”
Perry will send three wrestlers into the state tournament which begins Thursday afternoon at 1:30. You can listen to play by play coverage of all three classes beginning tomorrow morning on the Raccoon Valley Radio Network.
