There has been several high-profile reports of sexual abuse and sexual harassment in the national news recently, and it impacts a lot of people.
ACCESS Assault Care Center Sexual Assault Services Coordinator Marcy Webb tells Raccoon Valley Radio she’s happy to see so much media coverage of sexual abuse cases, like the Larry Nassar case, with all the victims that he affected involving athletes.
“It’s actually a pretty common type of case that we see. I was glad for people to get some education on the idea that people in power are often able to commit these crimes without anyone holding them accountable. And it’s something that we need to bring more attention to and more light to as a nation.”
A social media campaign surrounding the #metoo also made a strong push to giving sexual abuse survivors a voice for their situation, which Webb believes helps to bring down a perpetrator’s “walls of silence” for their crimes.
“I see that as a really positive thing because even though there’s still lots of people that have been victimized but haven’t spoken out yet, this is a way to normalize the fact that crime-victimization is very, very common, it’s never the survivor’s fault. No matter when you choose to report it, or whether you report it or not, we’re building up a nation of people who understand this crime and will support you.”
