Ever since Cody Matthewson was hired as the next head coach of the ACGC football team, Madrid Tiger orange has faded into the Charger yellow and black. Matthewson, a Madrid graduate, is utilizing the help of some other Madrid connections to build his staff heading into spring/summer conditioning.
Seemingly the most important to the head coach is his father, Kurt. Cody tells Raccoon Valley Radio, having his Dad on the sidelines as an assistant coach will be vital to a successful program at ACGC. “Bringing my father along with the staff, bringing him out of retirement is going to be key. That’s huge. I don’t think you understand. I lived with the guy for years up until I was 18. He’s my biggest mentor and he coached with Coach (Randy) Hinkel for 23 years. Having him join the staff this year is going to be a very huge part.”
Matthewson has also added former Tiger quarterback Taylor Christensen to his coaching staff. Christensen and Matthewson rushed for a combined 2,245 yards and 34 touchdowns during the 2007 Madrid Tiger season. To hear more from Matthewson, listen to tonight’s special two-part interview with the new head coach on the Guthrie County PM Sports Page.
