The prolonged cold spell took another meet off the schedule tonight for the ACGC boys and girls track teams. Many Chargers will now have to wait almost two weeks since they last competed a week ago in Perry. Even with the sluggish opening to the season, some athletes are still off to a fast start. Among those is a surprising freshman in the girls 400 meter hurdles.
Audrey Stowe unexpectedly claimed the title in the event at the Davis Relays in Perry. She finished the race at 1:18.40, nearly two seconds faster than her third place finish at the Greene County Early Bird to start the season.
Though some were surprised at the result, Head Coach Colin Shawgo saw potential from Stowe early on. “Audrey is a wonderful newcomer to have on the team as a freshman. Both Coach (Lyndsey) Noe and I had realized the first time we had watched her run that she was going to be able to make a pretty good impact on our season. So I wasn’t as surprised as some of the other people might have been when I saw her compete as well as she did at the Perry meet. She’s got a lot of natural talent and natural ability. I think that she’s really going to have a lot of improvement by the time it’s all said and done for us.”
Weather permitting, the Charger girls and boys will see full action again on Tuesday at Earlham. The Crusader Relays are cancelled, however some athletes will tough out the cold tonight for a running only event at Van Meter. First events start at 4:30pm.
