Don1We are coming down to the final days before the June 5th primary election, and there’s one contested primary race in Greene County.

Don Batt of Boone is a Republican candidate for Iowa House District 47. He is a US Army veteran, a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), a Moose Lodge member, a lifetime member of the A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education (ABATE)-which doesn’t endorse political candidates-and an organizer for the Boone County Freedom Flight. He is a former Boone City Council member and is retiring from his current job  as a city employee for the City of Boone.

If elected, Batt wants to promote more businesses to locate in Iowa, while also promoting small businesses. He wants to see healthcare be more affordable and have more oversight for the Management Care Organizations (MCOs). He would also like to see priority based spending, so that decisions can be better made on core government services, while also eliminating what Batt calls “waste.” He says he’s running for the Iowa House because of his time as a City Council member.

“The community responded by asking me to run for city council. And at that time I didn’t like politics and I didn’t even know who the mayor was. But I accepted the challenge. I won my first election, then the second, and then the third. I got to meet legislators while I was on the Council. I fell in love with the capitol. My job kept me from running for office in the legislature, but now that I’m retiring, now I have that chance to fulfill my dream and I’m going to do it.”

Batt is running against Republican candidates Phil Thompson of Jefferson and Victoria Sinclair of Boone for the primary election. To hear more from all three candidates, click the link below.
