With the 4th of July holiday tomorrow, Jefferson residents are reminded of the City’s ordinance against shooting off fireworks.
Police Chief Mark Clouse says fireworks such as sparklers and snakes are allowed in the city limits. However, anything bigger, like what is being sold in the temporary outdoor tents in town, are prohibited from being shot off. Clouse explains what may happen if someone is found to have shot off a firework determined to be “illegal” by the city’s ordinance.
“A lot of times, depending on the situation, the officer would probably, most likely give that person a warning the first time around. If we’re called back or if we have to revisit that situation, you would be issued a citation for violation of that city ordinance. And at that point, your fireworks would most likely be seized by the officer.”
Since last Thursday, the police department responded to at least six calls of reports of fireworks being shot off in town. Clouse adds that the individual could also face a fine as well. He hopes everyone enjoys the holiday responsibly.
