acgcIt may be hard to believe, but we are just two weeks away from the start of the 2018 volleyball season with first practices, and less than a month away from the first matches. The ACGC volleyball team made it to the Class 2A Regional Semifinals last season and are looking to go even further this year. Though they will have to do it with a new head coach and without three star seniors who graduated this spring.

Trevor Irwin, who was the assistant coach during that run to Council Bluffs, is excited to take the reigns in Guthrie Center this fall. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio what the team has been up to over the offseason.

“We worked really hard in June. We did an Audubon league where we played every single Monday. We did more of a scrimmage play during that. But July is really where we have been really tuning it up. We have Tuesdays and Thursday open gyms in July and have been getting down to the strong fundamental pieces. We’re working hard on picking up our tempo, our hitters are working hard on hitting different hits. Our setters are working hard on pushing the ball and getting to the ball and just really working on being a scrappy team.”

The team will also be hosting a “mad hatter” fundraiser for the program on Sunday. For more information on the fundraiser, click on the link at the bottom. To hear more from Irwin, listen to tonight’s Guthrie County PM Sports Page, beginning at 6pm on True Country K107.9.
