MJBThough many may think this item seems obsolete, a library card can still be used today to access a wealth of information. It is with that in mind that libraries across the country celebrate National Library Card Sign-up Month in September.

For most libraries, including the Mary J. Barnett Memorial Library in Guthrie Center, the cards are free. Director Pat Sleister describes how a prospective patron can get their card. “You have a form to fill out, which doesn’t take anytime. It’s even available on our webpage, so you can print it off there and bring it in. If you’re under 14 you need a parent(‘s) signature, but that’s not a big deal.”

Sleister says the cards are not only used to check out books, but to use the library’s computers as well. She also says the cards can be used at any other Guthrie County library. Along with the card, new members will receive a packet of information about the library and their services, a keychain to put the card on, and a clip magnet.
