The ACGC football team suffered a tough loss in week five at home against the Van Meter Bulldogs. They certainly didn’t let that spill over into week six as they ran wild on the Clarinda Cardinals, securing their most convincing victory in program history, 38-20.
The Chargers carried the rock 51 times for 400 yards. Senior Ben Kingery led the way with a record 182 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns while classmate Gabe Rowley rushed 20 times for a career-best 164 yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Bryce Littler also set a personal best with 54 rushing yards and a touchdown, capped off by a 42 yard play in the first half. After allowing 12 points in the first half, the Charger defense allowed just one touchdown. Sophomore Lucas Marsh also tallied three sacks in their first ever meeting with the Cardinals.
The impressive performance was even more astounding with the absence of junior lineman Quynton Younker due to an injury. Head Coach Cody Matthewson tipped his hat to his lie for coming through without one of their best players.
“It just really came down to us executing on the offensive line. They executed really well. We blocked up where we were supposed to and when they gave us blitzes in the A gap which we’ve seen all season, our freshman Logan Brokaw has done a great job picking those up. So I think we’ve finally kind of got our set.”
The Chargers improve to 2-4 on the season while Clarinda drops to 2-4. ACGC will carry this momentum into next Friday’s homecoming showdown against West Central Valley.
