The 6th annual “Heat the Streets” 5k run and walk in Guthrie Center is this Saturday, with registration beginning at 8am and the race beginning at 9. Participants will also have the option of walking a shortened 2k for this year’s event.
The event is put on by the Guthrie County Hospital Fitness Center, and Fitness Coordinator Diane Duzenbury says the event’s $20 participation fee is used to help people who can’t afford full membership to the fitness center.
Duzenbury says participation from local residents really does make a big difference in helping members stay committed to healthy lifestyles.
“It’s a great event. If you could just see the faces of, and I can’t always share the people that get to benefit from it, but we know and we get to see how much they really do enjoy coming. They take advantage of it; they use it and they better themselves and they’re stronger and better people for doing so.”
Duzenbury says attendance the past two years hasn’t been great because of poor weather, but this year the fitness center already has 65 registrants, and they are expecting additional people to show up Saturday morning. The National Weather Service says the forecast for Saturday is clear skies and sunny with a high temperature of 77 degrees.
