The Dallas County Board of Supervisors held a two-part meeting Tuesday, with the regular session in the morning, and a special session in the evening to present the fiscal year 2020 budget.
The regular session began with payroll change notices, which included the approval of hiring Suzanne Hegarty as the new Executive Director of Dallas County Public Health. The Board also approved promotions for three Treasurer’s Office employees, who will now serve as office managers for the three branches of the department. Next, the Supervisors received an update on the progress of the law enforcement center, which has been slow but steady due to weather issues in February. They also approved the 13th pay application for the center, which was for $572,830.34 paid to six contractors.
The Board then approved the second pay application from Trinity Construction, in the amount of $48,260, for the courthouse renovation project. Other items approved during the morning session included: the purchase of four new vehicles for the Sheriff’s Office; the allocation of 5.93 acres of wetland mitigation credits for the City of West Des Moines; and the appointment of Jim Uthe as the County Weed Commissioner. The Board also tabled a decision on the purchase of a Q-Matic system for the Treasurer’s Motor Vehicle Department.
The Supervisors reconvened at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a public hearing to present the County budget. First, they approved the Compensation Board’s recommendation to give the elected officials 3% raises. They then went over the details of the budget, which included $48.5 million in expenditures, and $44.6 million in estimated revenue. Additionally, the tax levies were set at $4.16 per $1,000 assessed value for urban residents and $2.34 for rural. There were no objections to the budget, so the Board approved it as presented.
