Yesterday was International Women’s Day, though it will be observed today in Perry with two separate but related events.
The first celebration will be the annual Women’s Day Coffee, running from 10 a.m. – noon at La Poste. The event is free and will include seven different speakers, raffle drawings, and a social time with refreshments. Founder Carol Cavanaugh says the event is a great way to bring people together and recognize the continued need for equality between genders. She adds, it’s also a way to look back at the past accomplishments of women, as well as looking into the future. “Probably what I want to get out most about International Women’s Day is it is a celebration of how far we have come, and the women that have contributed to society. So that’s kind of what we’re looking at.”
The second event will also be held at La Poste, featuring several female musicians. The “Women Rock La Poste” concert will run from 6-9 p.m., with performances by Kat Darling of the High Crest, Sarah Nevins of the James Biehn Band, and Drake University music student Lani. Darling and Nevins will also be joined by their daughters. The music will primarily be in the singer/songwriter genre, with some folk tunes and covers mixed in. Cost to attend the concert is $10 per person, and appetizers will be provided.
