Crocheted hoola hoops adorning Josh Davis Plaza
It’s once again the time of year that the City of Perry is covered from head-to-toe with colorful yarn, as the community prepares to celebrate the Fiber Art Fair.
This is the third year for the event, which is organized by Art on the Prairie. Already, the City has been decked out with around 115 light pole wraps and bench warmers, as well as the fiber hula-hoop wall in Prairie Lane — located between Mary Rose Collection and Perry Perk — and quilt art in Josh Davis Plaza provided by the Perry Piecemakers Guild. Additionally, there will be 16 artists and demonstrators taking part this year, which organizer Jenny Eklund says is a record for the event.
Eklund feels the Fiber Art Fair has been a big hit since its inception, partly because it’s such a unique art medium. “Your knitting and crocheting, and all the textile is almost kind of like an art that’s unsung. And so we like to keep that in the forefront. We like to keep showing different ways that the spinning or the felting is just so beautiful! And we’re just trying to introduce that and keep that alive, and bring it to the forefront.”
The Fiber Art Fair will be held tomorrow from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., with the classes and demonstrations all held at La Poste. Other downtown businesses will also be taking part in some way, including Ben’s Five and Dime, Hotel Pattee, Mary Rose Collection, and Betsy Peterson Designs.
