guthrie center schoolGuthrie Center School Board members along with Superintendent Steve Smith are heading to the Iowa Association of School Boards Convention this November.

The event, which will be held on November 20th and 21st at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, will feature keynote speakers and workshops throughout the two days that are geared toward providing attendees with knowledge to help them improve their school board’s governance capabilities, especially in the ever-changing digital age.

Smith has been to the convention in the past, and he says it will be a great learning experience for his school board.

“It’s a great opportunity for school board members to first of all, go some place as and to operate as a team.  (They’ll) go to things, discuss things and have dialogue about the sessions that they’ve gone to because they all get to choose what interests them.”

Smith says such sessions can be about a wide array of topics, from how to improve student achievement to school safety and more.

“They target a number of topics that I think they throw out as being something the folks would be interested in.  Technology will be a very big area that the school members will be able to attend some sessions on.”

All five school board members have confirmed their plans to attend the convention.  The Board will finalize its agenda and goals for the convention at its November meeting, currently scheduled for Monday, November 18th.
