If you haven’t been to any of the parks in Perry since this past summer, you may be shocked to see how they look now, after the Parks and Recreation Department planted around 120 new trees at various locations.
Parks and Rec Director John Anderson says his department planted a tree nursery a few years ago. When they took a look at it during the summer, it was evident they needed to move the trees quickly before they grew too big. To help out, the Perry City Council approved the purchase of a tree spade, which Anderson says has been invaluable. “So the actual process of transplanting was a major success. You know, we’re not arborists by any means, we’re not experts. But we had a fairly decently educated idea and a plan to build a tree nursery, and then a few years later move those trees into our parks. So to see that idea go from just that to a successful program is really a great thing for us, we’re really excited about it!”
Anderson points out, the Parks Department isn’t going to replace all of the 120 trees they moved out of the nursery right away. Instead, they will plant around 25 at a time in order to make sure they have the time and resources to care for the nursery and the trees moved out of it. He adds, with the threat of Emerald Ash Borer knocking on Perry’s door, he’s glad they have an efficient method of extracting and replacing ash trees when the pests become a problem.
