Guthrie County CourthouseThe Guthrie County Board of Supervisors approved an intergovernmental agreement with six other counties earlier this week for a new shingles recycling program initiated by County Sanitarian Stephen Patterson.

Patterson tells Raccoon Valley Radio that Guthrie County will align with Cass, Carroll, Buena Vista, Shelby, Crawford and Harrison Counties for the new program, which should begin sometime next summer.

Patterson says a cement pad will need to be built in the late spring or early summer of 2014 before shingles recycling can begin.  The other counties participating in the program have already started their recycling efforts.

The cement pad and necessary push wall will cost approximately $10,000, and Patterson says he will be applying for a grant through the Iowa DNR by the end of this year to help get some of it paid for.

Patterson says the shingles will help to provide a good additive to asphalt for the roads of Guthrie County which have been under much construction in recent months and will continue to be under construction next year.
