As of this week, the Good Samaritan Food Pantry in Adel has expanded its service area to better help families in need in the southwest portion of Dallas County.
The pantry is now open to residents with Redfield, Dexter, and Linden addresses, in addition to those in Adel, Minburn, DeSoto, and Van Meter. Reverend Julie Higgs, the board chair for the pantry, says the change came as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left many people struggling to feed their families. She points out, anyone seeking assistance will need to bring to the pantry a current photo identification and a piece of mail that includes your name and address. You should also have a list of the birth dates of everyone in your household.
Patrons of the pantry receive seven days-worth of food once a month, and they can also visit weekly for perishable items like fruits and vegetables, baked goods, and bread. The hours of operation are Mondays from noon-2 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., and Tuesdays from noon-2 p.m. The pantry is located in the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School District Administration Center in Adel. Higgs advises people that they will not be allowed inside the pantry, but will have their orders filled and delivered to their vehicles by volunteers. She also encourages monetary donations from the public, given the higher demand on the pantry at this time.
