Students in Guthrie County are back in their respective school buildings for the first time since March this week, so motorists should be aware of kids navigating the streets in the mornings and afternoons.

Sheriff Marty Arganbright says he’s enjoyed seeing school buses and students back on the streets this week, but advises motorists to be careful, “It’s just the safety concerns of kids on sidewalks or kids on their bikes in the morning or afternoon, walking, you need to be cautious of crosswalks and just be aware of the kids out.”

When sharing the road with bicyclists, Arganbright advises drivers to be extra vigilant in school zones and residential neighborhoods. Children don’t usually know all of the rules of the road, so if a motorist is turning left and a bicyclist is approaching in the opposite direction, wait for the rider to pass; if you’re turning right and the bicyclist is approaching from behind on the right, let the rider go through the intersection first and always use your turn signals; and watch for kids turning in front of you without looking or signaling.
