With lawmakers continuing to discuss important topics during the 89th Iowa General Assembly, District 10 State Senator Jake Chapman has brought forth an amendment dealing with abortion.

Chapman says he is proposing a constitutional amendment that he also proposed last year, that he believes will put the power back in the hands of Iowans. Chapman explains a previous Iowa Supreme Court decision created what he feels is a new constitutional right and how his amendment would aim to change it.

“It just basically says there is no fundamental right, it nullifies that (Iowa) supreme court decision and puts the power back into the people through their legislative body. I’m very optimistic that we are going to get something done on that front.”

Chapman says the Iowa House has introduced similar legislation that has already made its way to the sub-committee process. If the amendment is approved by both the Senate and House this year, it needs to be approved next year before going on the ballot for the people of Iowa to vote on before it can be added to the state’s constitution.
