Paton-Churdan opened Class 1A Region 2 girls’ basketball tournament play in Churdan last night with a 57-51 overtime victory over Ar-We-Va (Westside). Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rockets improved to 15-5 on the season while the AWV Rockets ended their season at 4-16, going 0-3 vs. P-C. The game was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.

Senior Danielle Hoyle, a 6′ 3″ post had 25 points for P-C. Senior Chloe Berns and junior Carmyn Paup each had 12 points. The Rockets turned the ball over 23 times and made six three-point baskets.

AWV trailed 22-16 at the half and 34-17 in third quarter before mounting a big comeback. Jadyn Smith banked in a three-pointer to beat the buzzer at the end of regulation to send the game into the four minute overtime. Smith entered the game with a 12 point average and scored 20. Sara Schurke averaged 4.8 points entering the game and scored 19 with five three-pointers. AWV had 14 turnovers.

Next up is another home game, this time vs. Martensdale- St. Mary’s on Tuesday, Feb. 16 in Churdan at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinal round. MSM beat Melcher-Dallas 60-42 in the first round. Tuesday’s game will also be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

The P-C boys can be heard tonight at 7 p.m. on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com vs. Glidden-Ralston in Glidden to begin Class 1A district basketball. Both teams are 3-16 and they split their two regular season meetings.
