A recent law signed by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds allows all parents to teach their kids driver’s education, and local public safety officials have some important reminders.

Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn says he hopes that parents are able to give their children the same quality education that kids would receive while attending a driver’s education program.

“I just hope that they are able to give them the same kind of diverse driving experience that trained instructors are. So, not only driving in a small town like Perry but also taking them out on the highway and maybe on gravel even into a bigger city like Des Moines so they get experience driving in all kinds of conditions.”

Vaughn tells Raccoon Valley Radio another concern he has is with working parents and possibly cutting corners without teaching them everything their student needs to know or practicing as much as they need.

“If you don’t feel that you don’t have the time or you don’t have the expertise to do it, put them in a driver’s ed course. There are several here in Perry, there are several in the Des Moines Area. There’s a program called Drive With Cops that do a lot of great things with the driver’s education program.”

The recently passed law allows parents to teach their children drivers education and also increases the hours for driving with a parent to 30 hours.
