At the most recent Perry City Council meeting, the process to ban consumer fireworks use within city limits took another step forward.

The Council approved the second reading of an amendment to Chapter 125 relating to fireworks after months of discussion since the most recent Fourth of July holiday. City Administrator Sven Peterson says the Council finally decided on what changes should be made.

“I think the Council has finally heard enough feedback that they wanted to try out just completely banning fireworks discharge within the city limits. Really the key with this ordinance change is going to be, I believe, education and enforcement.”

Peterson tells Raccoon Valley Radio the City will look to do more education for citizens and will need collaboration for enforcing the ordinance if it were to pass its third required reading and go into effect.

“When it comes to enforcement we are going to need to partner with the community and law enforcement to be able to make sure that we are able to effectively and efficiently enforce these rules that (the) city council is in the process of setting.”

The third reading of the amended ordinance will take place at the Council’s January 3rd meeting.
