The most recent release of the U.S. Census data has lawmakers on the move into redrawn districts.
Current Democratic Iowa State Senator for District 22 Sarah Trone Garriott announced she will be running in the Iowa Senate District 14 which includes Adel, Van Meter, Waukee and portions of Clive and West Des Moines in Dallas County. Trone Garriott talks about her decision to run in the new district.
“This district is 81-percent of my old district. My district was so large, I had about 73,000 individuals living in my district and so they cut it in half and I had a choice if I stayed in Polk County and ran for that side of the district or if I bought a new house in Dallas County and continued to serve that west side of my Dallas County side of the district with a little bit of new territory.”
Trone Garriot tells Raccoon Valley Radio one of her important topics includes focusing on making the legislative process more transparent so Iowans can know what’s going on and how to be involved.
“This is a strange process, not most folks know about how this works but these decisions are so important and so I’m always working to educate the public about how to be part of this process and it’s really important for me to call it out when I am seeing bills being rushed through and Iowans not having a chance to weigh in.”
Trone Garriott says other important topics for her include public education as well as the workforce shortage and increasing access to childcare.
