In today’s climate, temporary teaching opportunities often present a challenging situation, so increasing sub pay and long term pay for substitute teachers was a main topic of discussion at the recent Perry School Board meeting.

Challenging work as well, substituting typically paid $135 to $150/day to be a guest teacher, as they used to be called. A temporary teacher’s wage would now range from $175.32 to $184.95 per day for close to 14 days. Coverage pay is when temps cover other classes during their prep time, so their pay would be between $20 and $25. Sub pay ranges from one day up to nine days at $150 a day, while subbing in a classroom for more than 10 days is considered long term pay for certain situations such as covering another teacher during six to eight weeks of maternity leave. Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund  (ESSER III) funds cover wages versus taxpayer money.

Anyone interested in helping kids grow and becoming a temporary teacher who has any existing four year degree may attend weekend classes at Heartland Area Education Agency in order to attain a Qualified Sub Authorization in lieu of traditional credentials in order to qualify teaching on a temporary basis.
