When the field for the Rollin Dyer Invitational wrestling tournament in Atlantic the first Saturday of January was announced, those following the sport had a feeling the 132 lbs. title match could be memorable, and it was. Greene County senior Kale Petersen topped Underwood’s Gable Porter 7-6 in a down-to-the-wire thriller. At the time, the match stopped Porter’s 66 match win streak and extended Petersen’s streak, which eventually grew to 74 straight. Both ended up being three-time State Champions and both are Division I recruits, Petersen at Iowa and Porter at Virginia.
Des Moines Register sportswriter Cody Goodwin sited that match as one of the most memorable from the recently completed season. He also noted that Porter was a one-point winner over three-time Class 3A State Champion Carter Freeman of Waukee Northwest in the finals of Urbandale’s Ed Winger Classic. That’s a trio of three-time State Champs that could have all been in the same bracket at the Ed Winger except for a knee injury that kept Petersen on the sidelines. Porter was in 1A, Petersen 2A, and Freeman, a junior and U. of Northern Iowa commit, in 3A.
Petersen and fellow senior McKinley Robbins (138) both won State titles for the Rams, the first time that’s happened in the history of the Jefferson-based program, and both finished their seasons undefeated.
