A bill was introduced in the Iowa Senate recently about banning minors from drag shows anywhere in Iowa, but didn’t gain much traction.

District 12 Senator Amy Sinclair says that she didn’t read into the bill much, because of an issue in how it was presented.

“And just on its face, it was just a little problematic because the way it was written, it was written so broadly that you might have a female playing the role of one of the soldiers in ‘The Nutcracker,’ and because it was a female in a male role, a child couldn’t go and watch ‘The Nutcracker’ in a ballet. Just the way it was really, really problematic because it wasn’t written targeted at sexual productions per se, those drag queen sexualized productions. It was written very, very broadly, and I think just the nature of the way the bill was written, it never got a subcommittee hearing.”

Sinclair mentions that when the bill was first introduced, there were some questions raised, a big one being “If legislators are pushing for parental control in other places, why are they trying to take it away here?” She gives her opinion on the subject.

“To say we should ban all parents from being able to access anything just because it offends our sensibilities, I’m not sure it’s something I would be on board with anyway.”

Sinclair adds that if a show is so sexualized to the point of obscenity though, that starts wandering into the area of child abuse, which she believes shouldn’t be allowed.
