An annual tradition was held in Greene County that focuses on youngsters learning about the agriculture industry.
The Greene County Farm Bureau Farm Tour saw fourth graders from Greene County and Paton-Churdan School District’s as they rotated through ten agriculture-related stations on Conner Juergensen’s farm in Churdan. Juergensen talked about the importance of having this event and why he continues to host it at his farm.
“I guess the importance to me is continual education of the younger generation to show them what we do, how we do it, and how to be safe while doing, and enjoy it.”
One of the exhibitors was the Greene County FFA Chapter helping with safety with farm equipment and implements. Senior FFA’er Austyn Funcke said she participated in the Farm Tour when she was in fourth grade and is now full circle being a presenter with farm safety and described why she wanted to volunteer to be a part of the program.
“Just because growing up on a farm I know it’s really dangerous and there are some things that could severely hurt you. So it’s great to know that at a young age and remember it as you go through (life) because living in small, rural Iowa you will come into interaction with some of these dangers.”
Greene County Farm Bureau Board member Alicia Heun added the ten agriculture fields included ag finance, an ag trivia game, farm safety, Iowa Corn brought two trailers, a drone presentation, along with lambs and goats, cattle, pigs and a trucking simulation. She said the kids were treated to a free lunch with the Greene County Cattlemen’s Association before heading back to their respective schools in the afternoon.
